A capsule is not a shopping list. It is a short list of pieces that all go together, so getting dressed takes a minute and every piece gets worn.

Before you think about buying anything, add the clothes you already wear most. The starter checklist covers the common pieces in one screen.

Neutrals do the heavy lifting

Most of a minimal capsule sits in two or three neutrals that mix freely: black or navy, gray, white or cream. A few pieces in a color you love keep it from feeling flat.

• Pick one dark neutral as your base
• Add one light neutral for contrast
• Keep color and pattern to a handful of tops and accessories

Count outfits, not pieces

Every top that goes with every bottom multiplies your outfits. A dress is an outfit on its own. Shoes multiply everything again, which is why a second pair often adds more outfits than a fifth top.

When a gap would add only one or two outfits, mark it as not needed. That is the point of a capsule.
